An angioplasty is a relatively simple operation which involves passing a long specialised tube up through a tiny cut in the groin, through the major blood vessels into the coronary arteries. This tube is known as a cardiac catheter.
Initially, an angiogram is done. This involves injecting an x-ray dye through the catheter so that the doctors can take a picture of the coronary arteries and see where they're blocked. Not all blockages are suitable for treatment by angioplasty.
If angioplasty is to be done, then a second catheter with an inflatable balloon on the end is passed up inside the first catheter and pushed through the artery beyond the blockage. The balloon is then blown up to squash the plaque of atherosclerosis in the artery and so open it up. The balloon is inflated several times until the doctors are happy with the result, and then all the tubes are removed.
