We have all experienced pain at some point in our lives. Occasionally a short simple course of treatment or perhaps even just rest may solve the problem. Treating the symptoms only, however, might have a short lived effect. For our treatment to be successful we believe in tackling the problem from its roots through careful ongoing assessment. Ideally the treatment provided should take into consideration the physiological, psychological and sociological aspects as well as long term prevention programs.

This holistic approach towards physiotherapy has led us to create a totally new concept. We have pulled out physiotherapy from a hospital setting and placed it in a relaxed and friendly environment surrounded by therapy pools, massage baths and a state of the art exercise centre, all of which are aimed at helping to stimulate our patients to lead a healthier lifestyle. This will enable you, the patient, to achieve a longer lasting effect from your treatment and help prevent a recurrence of the symptoms.

For the first time in Malta, we have brought all these essential components of treatment and prevention together under one roof.

Aquaciser

The Aquaciser is comprised of an exercise chamber, a water reservoir and control console. Temperature, depth, belt direction and speed can all be manipulated from the console's touch-screen control panel so treatment protocols are clearly documented.

Water provides resistance throughout a given range of motion, in all places of movement, providing a hydrokinetic exercise. Because water is so much more viscous than air, it is possible to prescribe therapeutic exercise at a relatively vigorous and intense level within a very protective environment.

Patient access in the Aquaciser is exceptionally easy because the water remains in the reservoir until the patient is comfortably situated in the exercise chamber. Water depth can then be adjusted from a maximum of 48 inches down to four inches, allowing the patient to progress from minimal weight bearing to normal weight bearing. Turn-around time is quick, as chamber filling and draining time is only three to four minutes.

Low Lever Laser Therapy (LLLT)

LLLT is a technique in where exposure to low-level laser light claims to improve wound healing, accelerate the inflammatory process and have a positive influence on pain. Taking the necessary precautions, this treatment is considered safe and effective.

Low level laser light is compressed light with certain characteristics which penetrates the skin and has the following physiological effect:

Biostimulation
· Improved metabolism
· Increase of cell metabolism

Improved blood circulation and vasodilatation
Analgesic effect
Anti-inflammatory and anti-oedematous effects
Stimulation of wound healing

Ultrasound

Ultrasound therapy is a thermotherapy technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to help relieve acute or chronic pain. It may be used to treat conditions such as musculoskeletal injuries, arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, and fibromyalgia.
It may help:

  • Stimulate healing without causing irritation
  • Speed metabolism and improve circulation
  • Break up and soften scar tissue and adhesions
  • Reduce chronic inflammation or swelling
  • Reduce irritation to nerve roots
  • Enhance the body’s natural healing process

Ultrasound therapy is generally safe.  It is not recommended in some cases, such as over a pacemaker, near the abdomen of a pregnant woman, or over the skull, eyes, heart or reproductive organs.  It is generally avoided in areas affected by cancer.

There are two approaches when using ultrasound therapy - continuous wave and pulsed wave.  In cases where heating is not desired, such as with acute inflammation or with wound care, intermittent (pulsed) is used, rather than the typical continuous application, which provides mechanical effects such as increased permeability of cell membranes and possibly repair of tissues.

The thermal effects of ultrasound therapy have been found to be beneficial in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, breaking down scar tissue and helping to stretch tendons. The use of ultrasound as deep heat therapy may also be accompanied by electrical stimulation of the muscle. This results in mechanical pumping, which would promote the removal of products of increased metabolism, and treat muscle spasms and microscopic tissue adhesions.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most commonly used medical procedures in the world. It involves inserting fine needles into specific points in the body to restore and maintain health. Acupuncture is commonly used to control pain and other symptoms associated with a number of medical conditions.

Most patients feel no pain or minimal discomfort as the needles are placed. Some may feel a pinch or sting accompanied by a sensation of warmth or tingling. The number and placement of the needles is based on the condition being treated. Usually, fewer than a dozen needles are inserted. The time the needles are left in place and the depth of insertion also varies. In most cases, the needles are left in place for 15 to 30 minutes. In some instances, the needles may be inserted just for stimulation and immediately removed.

Acupuncture may be used for a number of conditions including musculoskeletal problems, weight loss, giving up smoking and many more.

Hydrotheraphy

Hydrotherapy is probably the oldest form of medical treatment, involving the use of water for soothing pains and treating diseases.

Its use has been recorded in ancient civilizations. It has been long accepted that hot water springs can improve health by increasing circulation. Hippocrates prescribed bathing in spring water for sickness. The use of water to treat rheumatic diseases has a long history and today, hydrotherapy is used to treat arthritis, burns, spasticity, ankylosing spondylitis, musculoskeletal disorders, spinal cord injuries and stroke patients with paralysis.

Immersion in water - and doing exercises in water - has always been a popular therapy. Thousands of years of treatments have built an enormous amount of expertise. A 2006 survey of research in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases discusses the vast amount of high-quality studies showing the effectiveness of hydrotherapy.

Computerised Muscle Analysis

Superficial electrodes are placed on muscles which need to be assessed. This technique evaluates and records physiological properties of muscles at rest and also while contracting. Electrical activity within the muscle is recorded and compared to the opposite muscle therefore any weakness can be detected and treated accordingly.

Diagnostic Ultrasound

Ultrasound has been used to image the human body for at least 50 years. It is one of the most widely used diagnostic tools in modern medicine. Diagnostic Ultrasound is used in our clinic to assist in visual feedback while recruiting deep muscles important for the treatment of back pain, visualise possible injured soft tissue and also for localising treatment sites therefore treatment is delivered more accurately.

There are no known harmful effects associated with the medical use of sonography. Widespread clinical use of diagnostic ultrasound for many years has not revealed any harmful effects.

Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive surgical procedure that uses sound waves to stimulate healing in some physical disorders, including plantar fasciitis. “Extracorporeal” means “outside of the body” and refers to the way the therapy is applied. Because there is no incision, ESWT offers two main advantages over traditional surgical methods: fewer potential complications and a faster return to normal activity. ESWT has been used extensively for several years to treat plantar fasciitis and other chronic musculoskeletal disorders like fractures, tennis elbow, tendon injuries and many more.
